The Elixir of Love ★★★★★ London Coliseum | Nov 15 - Dec 5, 2024

One of the most staged of all operas, Donizetti's The Elixir of Love is always an audience favourite, and this production definitely demonstrates the reason for its popularity. All the romcom elements are present, and this company squeezes lots of fun from the familiar and fulfilling formula. In this version set in WWII, Rhian Lois puts in a delightful performance as the willful and vivacious Adina who spurns and teases her lovestruck suitor, Nemorino, until he suddenly becomes the heartthrob sought after by all the women at the manor house. Lois is at the top of her game, and her voice sparkles with a luminosity and liquidity that ensures that Nemorino is not the only one enamoured by her charms. As the timid, but determined devotee of the fickle Adina, Thomas Atkins, like his character, seemed to grow in confidence on the night we attended. His singing of the aria, "Una furtiva lagrima" in Act II was nothing short of a triumph. As Belcore, Dan D'Souza was delightfully pompous bringing a strong baritone voice to his part. We also loved Brandon Cedel as the consummate charlatan, Dulcamara. Cedel's "Udite, udite, o rustici" is delivered with perfect patter-song precision. Nicky Shaw's set is wonderfully impressive, and Matt Powell's video design is quite ingenious. The television cartoon that accompanies the overture hilariously sets the tone for all that is to follow. Zahra Mansouri's costumes cleverly meet the brief, and the parachute/wedding dress is quite a neat bit of invention. Director Harry Fehr manages to masterfully bring together all the ingredients which make for a magical night at the opera.
