War Horse ★★★★★ National Theatre | Until July 30, 2026

Michael Morpurgo’s tale of a horse caught up in the First World War was first published in 1982, but it remained largely under the radar until the National Theatre’s landmark 2007 production transformed it into a theatrical phenomenon. A successful film adaptation by Steven Spielberg followed, but War Horse has now returned to its natural home: the stage. Happily, this revival captures all the wonder, emotion and imaginative power that made the original production so unforgettable. The production’s greatest triumph remains the astonishing puppetry. Joey and his fellow horses are brought to life with such skill and sensitivity that within moments they cease to be stage constructs and become living, breathing creatures. It is a remarkable feat of theatrical illusion. The story begins when Albert’s hard-drinking father squanders an absurd sum on a riding horse at auction and then wagers with his brother that the animal can be trained to plough the family’s fields. The task falls to young Albert, whose patience and devotion forge an unbreakable bond with Joey. When the horse is sold into military service, Albert, despite being underage, enlists in the hope of finding him again. What follows is both an adventure and a lament: a moving tale of loyalty between boy and horse set against the brutal waste of war. In depicting the suffering of soldiers on all sides, War Horse transcends its historical setting to become a powerful meditation on the human cost of conflict. It is difficult not to be deeply moved. This is theatre at its most magical, engaging both the imagination and the emotions with equal force. Tom Sturgess gives an excellent performance as Albert, supported by strong work from Jo Castleton and Stephen Beckett as his parents. Special praise, however, must go to the puppeteers, whose artistry breathes life and spirit into Joey and his fellow horses. Their achievement remains the beating heart of this extraordinary production.
