Saturday Night Fever ★★★★★ Sadler's Wells Peacock Theatre | Feb 4 - Mar 26, 2022
Saturday Night Fever is bound to raise your temperature! This is a show that just sizzles with singing, dancing and sex appeal. The story of Tony Manero (Richard Winsor) and Stephanie Managano (Olivia Fines) comes to the stage in an adaptation that completely delivers all the energy of the original. Bill Kenwright's direction sets a breakneck pace that never lets up. There's not a moment when one might be distracted or the mind might wander. The great music of the Bee Gees ("Stayin' Alive," "Night Fever," "How Deep Is Your Love") plus that of other disco icons keeps the audience in the mood, and the non-stop dancing is simply breathtaking. You have to wonder how Richard Winsor does it. His stamina is nothing short of amazing. Kudos also to Fines, Jasmin Colangelo and the rest of the cast who do a fine job. The choreography of Bill Deamer is spot on. All the dance numbers work and the cast execute them delightfully. The second act in particular seriously abridges the plot but that doesn't really seem to matter. The darker elements of the narrative aren't dwelled on but no one is here for the story. The audience wants spectacle and smooth moves, and that's what they get. This is a show whose great vibes are simply infectious.
