Other Spaces, 180 The Strand - FREE - ★★★★★ - Until December 8, 2019

This thought provoking exhibition by United Visual Artists is presented by The Store X The Vinyl Factory in collaboration with the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Paris. Other Spaces features three large-scale installations – Our Time, Vanishing Point and The Great Animal Orchestra. Each of these immersive environments makes us contemplate different realities that define our existence and inform our world. The oscillating light projections of Our Time bring us to terms with one dimension of our existence and references Foucault's pendulum. Vanishing Point questions how we perceive ourselves in space, never composing itself in the same way twice. Space is made to evolve constantly as our relationship to it is re-drawn. These two abstractions come together and are made concrete in a comment on our embodied environment. The Great Animal Orchestra presents a soundscape of animal sounds gathered by American musician and bioacoustician, Bernie Krause. This final work is awe inspiring and also depressing as we realise how many of these species are now extinct. The exhibition beautifully takes us from contemplation of the wondrous abstractions of the human condition to a warning about the loss of our world's wonders.
