There are many reasons that the eponymous film has become a cult classic. It echoes so many of those tales that form part of our collective imagination such as Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, or Pygmalion. The idea of the transforming power of love has a universal appeal, and the film, Pretty Woman, was a contemporary story that exemplified the archetype. However, what made that particular film interpretation stand out was the chemistry between its two stars. Fortunately, Danny Mac as Edward Lewis and Elly Jay as Vivian Ward manage to create the same electricity in the stage version. The show's appeal depends on the central relationship being captivating and credible, and it is. That said, we have to note that Bob Harms as Happy Man, and in various other roles, came very close to stealing the show. The production number "On A Night Like Tonight" was a definite high point, and Harms' dance sequence with Alex Charles was utterly delightful. Another memorable moment is the terrific "A Night At The Opera." Cilla Silvia and Kurt Kansley as Violetta and Alfredo from La traviata do a fine job of both musically and thematically underscoring the iconic nature of the love story. Jerry Mitchell's direction paces things well and his choreography is masterful. Fans of the film will not be disappointed in this reimagining of their old favourite and those unfamiliar with the movie have a treat in store.
