The Good Life ★★★★ Richmond Theatre | November 23 - 27, 2021

If you loved the TV show, you'll enjoy this delightful revival. And if you've never seen the show, you're in for a treat. Jeremy Sams brings the atmosphere of the original hit series to the stage and captures all the innocent fun associated with it. However, the show always had a slightly more serious side, which couldn't be more relevant to today's social context. The idea of sustainability and working from home have become darkly serious and relevant topics in this time of Covid and environmental crisis. As well, there is the wonderful timeless theme of skewering hypocrisy and snobbery, a favourite target of most farce. It all adds up to an amusing and gently thought-provoking evening of comedy. The irreplaceable Rufus Hound is an excellent Tom and he is well matched by Sally Tatum as Barbara. Dominic Rowan as Jerry is just right and hits all the notes creating a character that is not too broad – weak, and ambitious, yet demonstrating some self awareness. Preeya Kalidas has, perhaps, the most difficult job with Penelope Keith's Margo being the gold standard. Kalidas works to provide the character with her own interpretation and she manages to expose Margo's vulnerability as well a her delectable follies. The cast is rounded out by Nigel Betts and Tessa Churchard who always shine in their astonishing portrayals of the various other characters. All in all, this is an amusing visit to the 70s that has some resonance with contemporary concerns and some insight into the enduring reality of human folly.
