Dick Whittington: A New Dick in Town ★★★★★ Above The Stag Theatre | Nov 2, 2021 - Jan 16, 2022

The title Dick Whittington: A New Dick in Town should be the first indication that this is not a panto for the family! Writers and composers Jon Bradfield and Martin Hooper with director, Andrew Beckett have again provided Vauxhall with a corker! This show isn't just full of double entendres – it overflows with a lot of single entendres also! No topic is off limits and the audience howl with glee at every lewd reference. This being a family friendly site, none of the jokes can be quoted but rest assured many are very clever and, what's more, new! In this version, young Dick doesn't have a cat: he has a cute and intelligent little French Bulldog. The Fitzwarrens run a failing funeral parlour which Queen Rat wants to acquire and Fitzwarren's twin brother runs a club on Gran Canaria... But that's enough of the plot – nobody really cares! It is all about having some good old, smutty fun. Matthew Baldwin is brilliant as Sarah Fitzwarren with great support from Jonny Peyton-Hill as Dick, Keanu Adolphus Johnson as Alex. Bradley Walwyn stood out as the Fitzwarren twins, and Nikki Biddington was a wonderfully evil Queen Rat. It must be said that George Reeve's fabulous video design and David Shields' lavish sets create a fantastic spectacle. The holiday island is quite stunningly conjured up. By the interval we were having a great time but then Act II became a glorious riot of quickfire one-liners. It was sheer brilliance! Of course, the show climaxes in Trafalgar Square with Dick being elected Mayor. He and the rest of the cast would certainly get our vote. This is adult entertainment at its best – inspired and unmissable!
