Sea Star: Sean Scully, National Gallery - FREE - ★★★ - Until August 11, 2019
No critical commentary is really necessary on Sean Scully's work. His own self-reflections are abundant and sufficient. You can catch up on YouTube or in the new BBC documentary (see below). He articulately points out the personal sources for his work and his sense of place in the continuum of art history. He is clear that his inspiration comes from many sources including Van Gogh among others. But, this show particularly focuses on his admiration for Turner and his painting "The Evening Star" and on display are two of Scully's Landline works inspired by the masterpiece. Scully's geometric works which are very much of their time assume a place in the tide of art history as they are placed in this context by The National Gallery. The Contemporary Program which shows masterworks of the past engaging more recent artists and providing energy to inform the newer work is a wonderful series of exhibitions. They have all been worth the time spent.
