Henry Moore: The Helmet Heads, The Wallace Collection - ★★★★★ - Until June 23, 2019
You will only, ever see this show here and now. The Wallace Collection does not lend its objects, and this exhibition depends on the conversation between the creations of Moore and the pieces from the collection. Moore spent many hours studying the armour at the Wallace, and here we see his inspiration and his creation. The ambiguity central to armour as protecting vulnerability while projecting confidence and security is played on by Moore throughout his career and is explored here in a variety of media. The relationship of outer and inner worlds, outer and inner space is captured, developed and culminates in Helmet Heads 1-6 (1950-1981) brought together here for the first time ever. This exhibition also makes us realise that the Wallace's armour collection transcends the false distinction of the functional and the aesthetic. As one who visits the Wallace often, I must confess that I have not given the armour collection the time and thought it deserves. But, seeing it anew through Moore's eyes brings a deeper appreciation of these creations as the wonders of art that they are. This is a beautifully staged exhibition offering a groundbreaking look into a source for the themes of much of Moore's work and creating a new reason to visit and appreciate the Wallace Collection. A show that must not to be missed!
