Anne Imhof: Sex, Tate Modern - FREE - ★★★ - Until March 31, 2019
The third annual BMW Tate Live Exhibition features a commission of Anne Imhof who has been awarded the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale among other prizes. This is the first time a single artist has used all the space of the two circular Tanks and the Transformer galleries. The former has a live performance which features choreographed and improvisational movement with specially composed music. Imhof is always present communicating by text. The tableaux continue for four hours, but it is expected that observers will come and go. In one tank, the audience is raised above the performance, and this hierarchy is reversed in the second tank. Indeed, the show is all about the reversal and blending of binaries, and this theme continues in the other venues that present Imhof's painting and sculpture. This is art which takes itself very seriously, and this is a show that is a major undertaking. It will also be presented in two other iterations at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea. Imhof is a rising star in the art world, and to paraphrase Miss Jean Brodie, "For those who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they will like."
