An Enemy of the People, The Union Theatre - ★★★★ - Until February 2, 2019
A 19th century play in a 20th century adaptation confronts a 21st century issue. The press, politicians and business conspire to hide an inconvenient truth and to use mass hysteria so that "the people" act in a short term, misguided self-interest. Sound familiar? The mayor's speech in Act II is a masterclass in demagoguery, a performance that some of today's politicians can only aspire to. Mary Stewart rivets the audience's attention whenever she is on stage. The play has some creaky moments, and some of the acting is uneven, but the contemporary reality exposed and some of the strong ensemble work and performances make this production a must-see.
