Amaze tells the story of Jamie Allan's childhood fascination with magic. The audience is introduced to his musician parents who encourage their son's passion, and we learn about his relationship with his mentors in the magical arts. The show is an intimate look at the development of a consummate performer who delivers some mind-boggling illusions that live up to the title of the show. The theme of the story is childhood wonder, and Allan does a nice job of recreating that feeling for the adults in the audience while he absolutely captivates his younger spectators. He is considerate and respectful of those who volunteer to participate and has a terrific rapport with the children who become his assistants. The audience participation moments are neatly integrated into the show and the bit with smart phone calculators is particularly fun. There are some fresh takes on classic card tricks and illusions like the levitated woman, but there are also some first-rate new deceptions which are bound to delight all ages. If we have any quibble with the show, it might be the proportion of narrative to the amount of magic. It may lean a little too much towards the former, as we always found ourselves anxiously waiting for the next moment of amazement. However, that may also be cleverly intentional, because when the magic moments come they are satisfyingly astonishing. This is a show about the magic of a family who nurtured their child's dream, and it definitely touches the imagination of all who see it. It is fantastic family entertainment.
