Kathy Rucker has written a play about two grifters who take advantage of vulnerable men in a catfishing scheme. The tale becomes a metaphor for the play itself and for art in general. While it can seduce, comfort and even exorcise, in the end it is an illusion. This is not a new idea, but it is brought to life by a strong company of actors. Tom Edward-Kane does a compelling job as the vulnerable Pete who takes care of an elderly father and blames himself for the death of his mother. Colin Bruce gets it just right as the irascible, dying Roy and Heider Ali creates a credible con artist and would-be writer in Dave. Lucia Young flawlessly moves through a complex gamut of emotions as Angie, the fictional girlfriend and somewhat reluctant accomplice. One quibble with the production might be with slipping American accents, but our major caveat is its length and rather monotone mood. The story arc is drawn out and a lot of unnecessary business is given to the actors. Those issues aside, however, we were drawn in to this world and did not come away feeling taken. It was uplifting and satisfying experience.
