London Never Dies ★★★ The London Cabaret Club | Until November 20, 2021

London Never Dies is most definitely a unique experience and also one of Wagnerian proportions! We were invited to arrive from 6 pm and we finally left around 11 pm with the afterparty still in full swing and likely to continue for several hours. The service was immaculate and unobtrusive, the surroundings opulent but understated. During cocktails – which were very good indeed – we were entertained by a male and a female vocalist as well as a saxophonist. Having been conducted to our table in the ballroom we were served a full three-course meal and plied with more drinks. The entertainment continued with a team of eight excellent dancers twirling and whirling on the raised central stage. The standard of dancing was super, as was the beautifully designed lighting. The theme of the show was "James Bond" and most of the costumes reflected this with immaculately suited young men and glamorously gowned women. Highlights included several balancing and aerial acts with performers literally swinging from the chandeliers. The three soloists reappeared throughout the evening and performed extremely well. The chanteuse even gave us a glimpse of her virtuosity by inexplicably singing a pair of stratospheric operatic arias. Everything was absolutely fine if a little anodyne; maybe a sophisticated comedian would have added some variation to the dizzying diet of leaping and spinning. All in all, we enjoyed an evening that was totally professionally presented and very well performed.
