Taylor Wessing: Photographic Portrait Prize, National Portrait Gallery - ★★★★ - Until February 16, 2020


The Taylor Wessing prize is a wonderful introduction to contemporary portrait photography. This year saw 3,700 submissions from 1,611 artists from 70 countries. The judges selected 55 portraits from 31 artists for display and have created a wonderfully intimate experience. So many exhibitions overwhelm with the volume of the work on display, but this is a lovely small exhibition that offers just enough to whet one's appetite for more. There is some amazing work here which gives us a glimpse into lives and characters from some an amazingly diverse groups. We meet individuals from fascinatingly different backgrounds, and each portrait resonates with meaning, striking chords of recognition while also inviting us to contemplate some very different realities. The 2019 exhibition also includes the In Focus display which this year features the work of Ethan James Green focusing on couples in New York's Lower East Side. For us a great part of the fun is to second guess the judges' awards, so be sure to vote on your favourite as you exit!

Hockney and Piero: A Longer Look ★★★★★ The National Gallery | Aug 8 - Oct 27, 2024 (Free Entry)

As part of The National Gallery's bicentennial celebrations, it is highlighting the role it plays in the formation of contemporary artists by introducing them to their predecessors. David Hockney has previously referred to the profound influence that the work of Piero della Francesca has had on him, noting particularly the master's The Baptism of Christ (1437-1445) which is part of The National Gallery's collection. This small exhibition creates a triptych which brings together Piero's work with two of Hockney's pieces which reference it: Looking at Pictures on a Screen (1977) and My Parents (1977). The former shows Hockney's friend, the curator Henry Geldzahler staring intently at reproductions of various artworks and invites viewers to do a similar close reading of the pictures which are in front them. St. Martin in-the-fields: Lunchtime Concerts ★★★★ FREE

Maybe the best musical value in London. The lunchtime concerts at St. Martin's are always a wonderful way to escape the hustle and bustle that is London and the sensory overload that is Trafalgar Square. This is a beautiful setting with great acoustics, and a church pew hard enough to make sure you don't nod off. Growing up in a family dominated by the forces of his religious aunt, Ivy, and his drunken military father, it is not surprising that Kenneth has become a fearful, obsessive rule-follower who cannot fully come to terms with being a gay man. But now that his judgemental father has died, Kenneth is returning to reclaim his family home, and, perhaps, himself. On the way to his past, he picks up a young hitchhiker who represents all the anarchic, sexual power that the older man has been unable to integrate into his life. The question becomes whether Kenneth can develop a balanced, authentic ego in the face of the apparently unrelenting disapproval of society represented by Aunt Ivy and the seductive, but ostensibly destructive, attraction of the young hitchhiker. This is simply a first-rate production of the 1964 Broadway musical based on Sholem Aleichem's story of Tevye, the Jewish milkman with five daughters, who reluctantly comes to terms with some new views about love and marriage. Set in Russian Ukraine around 1905, the life for poor, Jewish people is hard but what holds the community together is tradition. However, change is on the horizon. Where once the matchmaker proposed a spouse, the father approved him and the marriage took place, Tevye now finds himself caught between children who have their own ideas about how such things should be settled and an Almighty who doesn't seem to understand his plight. Nevertheless, in a good-hearted and humorous fashion he generally finds his way to deal with his tribulations. Seventeen young hopefuls audition for the chorus of a big Broadway show and only eight will be chosen! The hopes and histories of the people whose job is simply to highlight the star suddenly take centre stage. This long-running, prize-winning musical of 1975 was based on interviews with real dancers and their stories are as moving today as they were when the show was first produced. Broken families, bullying, homophobia and so much more are exposed by the aspiring performers who find their refuge and comfort in the theatre. Marvin Hamlisch's music is unforgettable and Edward Kleban's lyrics are masterful. From the desperation of "I Hope I Get It" to the hilarity of "Nothing" to the poignancy of "At the Ballet," this is a score that is truly exceptional, and all of the current cast manage to deliver. The tone for the show is set by an officious transit employee in the lobby before the journey begins, and the odd scattered newspaper on the theatre seats prepares us for the familiar commuter ordeal. Cockfosters is a series of very funny skits tied together by a slim narrative about an awkward, gaffe-prone boy who meets a girl with "trains in her veins" on their shared journey from Heathrow to the aforementioned terminus of the Piccadilly line. Along the way they encounter all the usual denizens of the Underground from beggars to buskers, plus her ex-boyfriend and his obnoxious school chum. And of course, there's the rowdy football fans, the lost tourists and the drunken hen party. We are also treated to a rather thorough history of the Tube, a spoof of its inane advertising, and an audience-participation trivia game about London's famous transportation system. When the daughter of writer, Tawni O'Dell, was the victim of a sexual assault, the horrific crime was not simply devastating for the victim. It affected all the members of the family, forcing them to face the real depths of the family's dysfunction and bringing out secrets that had long festered beneath the surface of their interactions. O'Dell's memoir of this real event is now dramatised with Amanda Abbington playing the buttoned-down O'Dell who rages on the inside, but who gives the socially expected responses when confronted by her daughter's rape. This is the way she deals with trauma, and despite some doubts, the way she has raised her children to get through it. But, the mother's coping mechanisms don't work for daughter, Esme, played by Rosie Day who descends into a self-destructive spiral that eventually forces her mother to re-evaluate her own manner of navigating through life. This delightful and respectful version of Jane Austen's masterpiece should please both devotees of the novel and those who enjoy clever and innovative theatre. It is nothing short of incredible that Austen's intricate courtship classic can be condensed into two hours and be successfully performed by only three actors, but that is what happens here. This is a small gem of a production which manages to maintain all the interwoven storylines of the original and to bring to life all of Austen's iconic characters. April Hughes' Elizabeth is nicely headstrong and willful, and Luke Barton's Darcy is suitably standoffish and condescending. They both successfully manage to convey the chemistry that brings the two together despite initial misgivings, as they deftly perform their assigned social roles. Nobel Prize-winner Annie Ernaux’s Les Années maps the author's personal journey onto the history of France from 1941 until 2006. It has been effectively adapted by Eline Arbo for the stage and in turn five actors (Deborah Findlay, Romola Garai, Gina McKee, Anjli Mohindra, and Harmony Rose-Bremner) either play the unnamed protagonist or act as a narrator/chorus for her experience. The cast adroitly slide into and out of character, and each bring strengths to the role although Garai and Rose-Bremner stood out for us. The trigger for the series of personal and social memories that are elaborated in the narrative is apparently a series of snapshots taken at various points in the central character's life. However, despite the vivid portrayal of her family history, her sexual experiences, and her political involvement there is a sense of detachment throughout.
