Bartolomé Bermejo: Master of the Spanish Renaissance, National Gallery - FREE - ★★★★★ - Until September 29, 2019
If you don't know Bartolomé Bermejo, this is a wonderful introduction to the Spanish Renaissance painter. Almost a third of his known work is on display in this jewel of an exhibition. There are six loans never seen outside Spain before. Bermejo's attention to detail, his ability to capture the human while contrasting it to the divine and his humour are all captivating. The qualities of the era are epitomised in these masterful and often under-appreciated works. The exhibition is in one room and is comprised of only seven paintings, including the National Gallery's own "Saint Michael triumphant over the Devil with the Donor Antoni Joan," but there is so much to see. Each work repays intensive study of its details with awe and delight. The National Gallery can sometimes overwhelm with the richness and vastness of its holdings. This is the perfect small exhibition offering so much in such a small space.
