Tango After Dark ★★★ Sadler's Wells Peacock Theatre | October 11 - 22, 2022

Tango After Dark brings the sophisticated and sensuous world of the Argentinian national dance to London. German Cornejo's current production showcases ten dancers, two singers and seven musicians. The show features a formidable display of dancing and some haunting song stylings from Antonela Cirillo and Jesús Hidalgo. Cornejo and his partner, Gisela Galeassi, were impressive, particularly in their pas de deux as were the couple of Camila Alegre and Ezequiel Lopez. The latter's complex lifts were flawlessly executed. The ensemble dances were striking demonstrations of the elegance, passion and variety that can be expressed in the tango, and all of the dancers evinced admirable skills. Unfortunately, the arc of the show is unclear, and it often seems like a series of separate performances with both acts ending on less than spectacular notes. The introduction of swathes of cloth at one point seemed unnecessary and was not really taken choreographic advantage of. The rather unsatisfying piecemeal nature of the show is ultimately saved by the quality of the troupe and by the wonderful experience of dancing that is the tango.
